Get help with MyFitnessTech

Android availability: MyFitnessTech for Android is currently in closed testing on the Google Play Store, with a full public release coming soon. To join the closed test, email [email protected] with the Google account you'd like added as a tester and we'll get you in.

MyFitnessTech is built by Fitness Tech, a small team of individuals currently organized as a Registered Student Organization at the University of Washington, Seattle. We're here to help you get the most out of the app.

Delete your account

This applies to the MyFitnessTech app (by Andrew Gui / FitnessTechUW). You can delete your account and all associated data yourself, at any time, at no cost — no login to this page is required to read these instructions.

How to request deletion In the MyFitnessTech app, go to Settings (or your profile in the Social tab) → Delete Account → confirm. Or email [email protected] from your account's email address to request deletion.
What is deleted, and what is retained This permanently deletes your account and all associated data — profile, username, friends, messages, shared photos, progress photos, and all health & fitness logs (nutrition, workouts, sleep, weight, heart rate, etc.). Deletion is immediate. Photos shared in chat are ephemeral and auto-delete from servers within 7 days regardless. No personal data is retained after account deletion.

Profile & Friends

How do I create a profile and username? When you first open the social features, the app will ask you to set up a public profile: pick a username, a display name, and (optionally) an avatar. Your username is how friends find and recognize you. Once you save it, you also get a unique friend code you can share.
Can I change my username? Yes, but only once every 6 months. This limit keeps usernames stable so friends can reliably find you and to prevent abuse. Your display name can be changed more freely — only the username is rate-limited.
How do I add a friend? There are three ways: (1) search for their username, (2) enter their friend code, or (3) scan their QR code. Any of these sends them a friend request.
How does the friend request handshake work? Friendships require both people to agree. After you send a request, the other person has to accept it before you become friends. Until they accept, you can't message each other. Either person can decline, and you can cancel a request you sent.
How do I control who can find me? In your privacy settings there's a toggle called "Discoverable by username search." When it's on, anyone can find you by searching your username. When it's off, you won't show up in search — people can still add you, but only if you give them your friend code or QR code.
What happens when I unfriend someone? Unfriending removes the friendship and permanently deletes your 1:1 conversation for both people, including any messages and photos still stored in the cloud. This can't be undone.

Messaging

How does 1:1 messaging work? Once you and another person are friends, you can open a 1:1 chat and send text and photos. Messaging is only available between accepted friends.
What happens to photos I send in a message? Message photos are ephemeral. They're stored encrypted and automatically deleted from our cloud after they're delivered, and within 7 days at most. The person you sent it to keeps a copy on their own device only — so only send photos to people you trust.
Why am I being asked to wait before sending another request or message? To keep the community safe, friend requests and messaging have anti-spam cooldowns and rate limits. If you send a lot in a short time, you may be briefly slowed down or asked to wait before sending more. Normal use is unaffected — this only kicks in with rapid, repeated activity.
What kind of content is allowed? Keep it friendly and fitness-focused. Sexually explicit, harassing, hateful, threatening, or illegal content is not allowed. Images are automatically screened for unsafe content, and accounts that violate the rules may be restricted or removed.

Account & Privacy

How do I delete my account? See the Delete your account section above for full steps. In short: in the app, go to Settings (or your profile in the Social tab) → Delete Account → confirm, or email [email protected]. Deletion is immediate and permanently erases everything tied to your account — profile, username, friends, conversations, messages, photos, push-notification token, and health and workout data. No personal data is retained after account deletion.
How do I report abuse or someone bothering me? You can report an abusive message or user from within the app, or email us at [email protected]. Tell us the username involved and what happened. We review reports and may restrict or remove violating accounts. You can also unfriend someone at any time to cut off contact and wipe the conversation.
Is my health data private? Yes. Your health and workout data and progress photos are private to you and are never shown to other users. We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties for advertising. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
How do I turn notifications on or off? Notifications for messages and friend requests are optional. You can enable or disable them at any time in your device's operating system settings for MyFitnessTech.

Devices & Health Data

How do I connect my BioBand or SipSync device? Open the app, go to the device connection screen, and make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone. Your device should appear automatically when powered on and in range.
The app isn't detecting my device Make sure your device is charged and powered on. Try toggling Bluetooth off and on in your phone's settings, then reopen the app. If the issue persists, restart both your phone and the device.
What devices are supported? MyFitnessTech is available on iOS through the App Store. The Android version is currently in closed testing on the Google Play Store, with a full public release coming soon. The app connects to BioBand and SipSync hardware via Bluetooth Low Energy.
How do I connect Apple Health (HealthKit)? On iOS, open the app's settings and enable the Apple Health integration. iOS will ask you to choose which health and fitness data types (workouts, heart rate, steps, sleep, etc.) the app can read. The app currently only reads from Apple Health and does not write data back. You can change these permissions at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → MyFitnessTech.
How do I connect Health Connect on Android? On Android, make sure Health Connect is installed (it ships with newer versions of Android and is available on the Play Store otherwise). In the app, open settings and enable the Health Connect integration, then choose which data types to share. The app currently only reads from Health Connect and does not write data back. You can change or revoke access at any time from the Health Connect app or your device's settings.
My Apple Health or Health Connect data isn't syncing Double-check that you've granted permission for the specific data types you expect to see (e.g., steps, workouts, heart rate). On iOS, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → MyFitnessTech. On Android, open Health Connect and review the permissions for MyFitnessTech. If data still isn't appearing, try fully closing and reopening the app.
How do I join the Android closed test? Email [email protected] with the Google account you want added as a tester. We'll add you to the closed test on the Play Store and send you the install link. A full public Android release is coming soon, so you can also just wait for that if you'd prefer.
